Automated Future - The Robots

Robots, Algorithms and You ...

Once I gave an assignment to my Grade 12 calculus students...
Assignment: "Write a Si Fi short story about your calculator..." One of them was telling about her calculator taking over the school. The teachers and the principal were doing weird and funny things and she as the superhero came to rescued everyone from the mischief of the calculator... It was fun assignment and a break from the monotonous excitement of calculus...

Now the debate about robotics is omniscient ... Robots are everywhere and computers are both facilitating our existence and exacerbating it too... We love the new ways o communicating and at times we are even addicted to social media. After all, they make gossipy chatter easier...
and Bill gates asserts that ...“20 years from now, labour demand for lots of skill sets will be substantially lower.” Which makes people apprehensive and stresses them further for the work prospects of the future.
Bill Gates: Argued that in 20 years a lot of jobs will go away and will be replaced by software automation...and software substitution - bots

Automation has already removed the need for humans in many workplaces, from building cars in factories to taking bookings in call centres. But we rarely debate what will it be like to work having a robot as a coworker and we avoid asking: what would it be like to actually work for a robot (machine)...
As things are progressing, a mixture of humans and machines is a very possible and probable scenario for the future workplace...
So new graduates and those preparing themselves for college and university...Have you thought about having a robot as your coworker...May be even your friend...?

Imagine your boss being this robot....
Imagine yourself being in the minority and the rest are the phalanx of robots...
Imagine you having a robot as your friend...Will you take it to the coffee shop...?
...And the robot thinks and makes decisions...May be it will dislike you...May be it will fall in love with you... and a new social issue will flare up... Will the union of humans and robots constitute a family...?
Will the robots complain about social rights and justice...?

They will entertain us...Play our music for us...

These are issues for the future. But remember, the future is you...and these are the questions that will confront you...These are the issues that will make workplace both fun and more competitive...

During the Industrial Revolution workers began a revolt and smashed the machines, since they were taking their jobs away. It was a big and serious issue... and it was never resolved...
We lived with it...We dragged our debate as more and more machines were introduced in the workplace and at home... We love the help of the machines, but also we resent that they can do things that we cannot...as human beings...
That debate is with us and will continue to drag with us as more and more robots are introduced and more automation surrounds our everyday life...
We will not be able to avoid automation, as we did not avoid industrialization...Automation is here to stay... and we better start thinking about it...in more serious manner...

What if the World Cup is won by the ROBOT TEAM...?

...And also, what if your teacher is a robot...?
Nao and Steve Stacey, the robot's human coworker-assistant-caretaker
Nao The Robot Teacher Becomes Newest Edition To Kansas School's Teaching Staff and the better part is that students can program Nao (pronounced now) the robot teacher to do whatever they'd like to do...
Imagine you programming your teacher/profs to do whatever you will like them to do...!
Indeed it will be fun...
Note:
Nao (pronounced now) is an autonomous, programmable humanoid robot developed by Aldebaran Robotics, a French robotics company headquartered in Paris.

An addentum
For more than 100 days Malaysia Arline Flight 370 is missing. All efforts of locating the plane have failed.
Now a group of independent computer experts have come up with computer models and they think they with the aid of computers will be able to locate the missing plane.
The models have placed the missing plane hundreds of miles southwest of the searched location...
Hopefully the new "computer help", of course with the programming of humans with locate the plane.
The computers are extending the humane capabilities and facilitating the celebration of life...Your social media is such a wonder...
So...

Study well...

Graduate with honours...
Be friends with robots...
Think about this and enjoy the future ... with your new friends - the robots...

  1. Hi Mr. Kevork!
I love this entry because 1. I love Computer Science. and 2. I love Computer Science. And a big "problem" nowadays is that most people are not getting educated well enough in the language of computers/robots which is CODE. (if you want to learn: www.code.org) But, when we know that our future will be filled with computers, robots, and automation, we must know how it works on a deeper level, not just a surface knowledge. This will allow us to stay on the same page and work together just in case - and there is a high possibility of this - we reach a technological singularity where machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence. We need to educate our generations now with strong computer science education so that we don't pay the price in the future. Also, all jobs will require some form of Computer Science knowledge in the next few years. ALL IN ALL, Computer Science will save us from downfall and lead us to prosperity! :)
